Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

Introduction

Apple Inc. is the company that designed, developed, and markets the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphones. These flagship iPhones, which come after the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, are the seventeenth generation model. On September 12, 2023, at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, the gadgets were unveiled alongside the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. On September 15, 2023, pre-orders opened, and on September 22, 2023, the gadgets were released to the general public. The lighter titanium body of Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, the USB-C port for quick data transfers and charging, the processor that can run console games, and the Pro Max’s new 5x telephoto zoom camera are what set them apart from the competition.

History

A few days prior to the event, fresh rumors surfaced, suggesting that Apple would continue to use the “Pro Max” moniker for the 6.7-inch model, despite numerous rumors suggesting otherwise. This was in reference to Apple’s earlier introduction of the Apple Watch Ultra.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: design in titanium

Last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max was amazing. It was among the greatest phones available for purchase in 2022 and for a significant portion of this year as well. However, there was one aspect of it that truly annoyed me: the stainless steel design. I quickly had to move to the smaller iPhone 14 Pro because the massive size and weight of the 14 Pro Max were too much to bear. Since the release of the iPhone 12 Pro Max in 2020, there has been an issue, and with the release of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the issue only got worse.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

With the iPhone 15 Pro Max, though, that is no longer the case. The brushed titanium frame that Apple switched out for the stainless steel one makes a significant impact. This is clearly visible on the specification sheet. The weight of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is only 221 grams, a significant reduction from the 240 grams of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and 13 Pro Max.
You can actually feel the difference when using the iPhone 15 Pro Max. When I took the 15 Pro Max out of its box and held it next to the 14 Pro Max, I could immediately tell which one was made of lighter material; the difference was like night and day.
However, there are other factors as well that contribute to the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s more pleasurable grip. Apple rounded the front and back glass slightly to make the titanium frame meet the screen more smoothly, in addition to making the device one millimeter thinner. This essentially means that the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro’s jagged, frequently excruciating edges are finally gone.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro Max turns out to be the most comfortable Pro Max iPhone I’ve ever held when you combine all of that. The phone is no longer painfully heavy and doesn’t dig into your palms, but the flat sides of the frame still allow you to hold onto it securely.
I’m ecstatic if this is how iPhone design will look for the foreseeable future. I loved almost everything about the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but its in-hand feel was one conspicuous absence. With the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple completely resolved that, and I sincerely hope that it keeps going in this direction for the foreseeable future. Although there have been some reports of weakened durability, my unit has not experienced any such problems. I should add that I haven’t attempted to intentionally break it in half, so take that as you will.
Lastly, Natural Titanium, which is the color featured in all of the review’s photos, is unquestionably the one to choose this year. It’s really breathtaking.

Action button on iPhone 15 Pro Max

The new Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro Max is my second favorite update, after the titanium design. To quickly turn on or off your ringtones and notifications, Apple has included a ring/silent switch above the volume buttons on the iPhone since its debut in 2007. The Action button, which can be customized, has taken its place on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Silent mode is by default enabled and disabled by tapping and holding the Action button (just like the old switch). It performs incredibly well for this, playing the same haptics you’re accustomed to when you flip the old switch and displaying a pop-up in the Dynamic Island.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

You can completely alter the functionality of the Action Button by opening the Settings app and tapping on its icon. In addition to starting silent mode, you can utilize the button to:

  • Activate the Focus mode.
  • Get the Camera app open.
  • Activate the flashlight.
  • Make a voice memo first.
  • Turn on the magnifying app.
  • Utilize a Siri Shortcut
  • Introduce a tool for accessibility

It is possible to further customize some of these actions. For instance, if you select that option, you can specify precisely which Focus mode you want to start. The button can be set to launch the primary camera, selfie mode, video recording, portrait mode, or portrait selfie if you have chosen the camera option. Since I started my review, I’ve had the Action button set to open the primary camera. I find that this method is far more convenient than using the (sometimes erratic) lock screen shortcut.
All of this is fantastic, but the Shortcuts option makes things even more thrilling. By default, there are a few suggested shortcuts, like starting a new note in the Notes app, opening any app, and opening Spotify to identify a song. While each of these is excellent, they only represent the very beginning of what is possible. One shortcut, for instance, that can carry out several tasks depending on how your iPhone is held, has already been shown to us. It is clever.
Even though I enjoy using the Action button a lot, I wish there was more functionality for it. Currently, the Action button can only be used by pressing and holding it, which implies you can only use it to do one thing at a time. Double- and triple-press options seem like a natural fit, and I sincerely hope Apple gives them some thought for a future software release.

Lenses on the iPhone 15 Pro Max

Nothing appears to have changed at first glance. The 48-megapixel (MP) primary camera, 12-megapixel (MP) ultra wide camera, and 12-megapixel (MP telephoto) camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max have respective apertures of f/1.78, f/2.2, and f/2.8. Those are the exact same specs as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, for those keeping score at home. However, the differences are not limited to those figures, and they have a significant effect.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

One improvement over the iPhone 15 Pro Max from last year is that the primary camera now defaults to 24MP photos, which means that each image has more detail. Now, when you take a picture of a person, dog, or cat, the Photos app automatically detects depth information, allowing you to later use the shot in Portrait mode. Apple’s latest Smart HDR 5 image processing is also included for better color reproduction. Additionally, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s telephoto camera now offers 5x optical zoom as opposed to its previous maximum of 3x.

It’s true that some of those upgrades sound more significant than others, but the one thing you really need to know is that the iPhone 15 Pro Max produces excellent photos.
Shooting with the 48MP primary camera has been a pleasure. I think the colors are amazing; they strike a perfect balance between character and realism. The iPhone 14 Pro Max occasionally produced “clinical”-looking photos, but now days, bright skies aren’t blown out as frequently, and lowlight performance is truly amazing.

The 5x telephoto camera has also proven to be quite remarkable. No, it doesn’t achieve the same optical altitudes as phones with 10x optical zoom, such as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is not the smartphone for you if you’re looking for one that can zoom in at ridiculous distances of 30x, 50x, or 100x. However, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the best option if you’re looking for a telephoto camera that produces some of the best 5x images you’ve ever seen.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

The change from 3x to 5x isn’t revolutionary, but it does bring you much closer to your subjects. Additionally, Apple’s tetra prism lens does an amazing job of preserving beautiful colors and a wealth of detail when viewed at 5x magnification, making it difficult to discern any discernible drop in quality when compared to the primary camera.

Because of the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 3x zoom, I frequently found myself in situations where I felt like I was missing out on special photo opportunities. I haven’t felt that nearly as often since using the iPhone 15 Pro Max for the past week.
The new telephoto camera has been great for finding new perspectives on subjects I’m taking pictures of, but I haven’t been trying to zoom in as close as possible with it (it can go up to 25x). And the extra optical length, in my opinion, makes a pretty big difference, whether I’m looking for a closer look at some cool lights in a restaurant or a really up-close shot of some artwork in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

Last but not least, every other camera fulfills their half of the contract with reliable outcomes. The 12MP ultra wide camera is still the same as it was the previous year and is an excellent performer, offering a wide field of view with little to no edge distortion and accurate color reproduction. It still functions as a macro camera, and the images it produces are still some of my best from a phone’s macro mode. Additionally, the superb 12MP sensor (with autofocus) from the iPhone 14 series is back here in case you need to snap a selfie.
To sum up, using the cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro Max has been a pleasure. The photographs have excellent detail, the colors appear noticeably better than they did a year ago.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: display

The display on the iPhone 15 Pro Max is exceptional. There isn’t much more to say about it, though, as it is almost exactly the same as the one on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

A 6.7-inch OLED display with a variable refresh rate of 120 Hz and a resolution of 2796 x 1290 is still included. The brightness levels are also the same, offering a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits for typical use, 1,600 nits for watching HDR content, and a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits for outdoor use.
It’s among the most visually appealing screens available on smartphones today, to put it simply. Unlike some Samsung phones, which can have overly saturated colors, the colors on this phone are lovely and vibrant. Everything appears incredibly smooth and buttery thanks to the 120Hz refresh rate.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

Like last year, this display retains the Dynamic Island at the top and has the ability to operate in an always-on mode. Apple has maintained its position as a market leader with its always-on display. When I originally received my iPhone 14 Pro Max last year, I was apprehensive about it, but it has since grown to be one of my favorite features of the latest Pro iPhone models. And even though it still falls short of my expectations in terms of functionality, I still much rather use the Dynamic Island over the notch.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: performance

The iPhone hasn’t had a performance problem in years, but as usual, Apple has decided to step things up even further with the release of the A17 Pro chip. This chipset, which powers the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, is somewhat similar to the A16 Bionic chip from the previous year. The 16-core Neural Engine and its six CPU cores are the same as they were last year, but that’s where the similarities end.
The A17 Pro is the first chip to be built on a 3nm design (compared to the 4nm design of the A16). You now have a six-core GPU instead of five cores, the Neural Engine can perform over twice as many operations per second (17 trillion up to 35 trillion), and RAM has been increased to 8GB from 6GB.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

Apple demonstrated the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max running real console games, including Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Resident Evil Village, and Death Stranding, at its iPhone 15 event. During a briefing for the iPhone 15 Pro lineup, I also had the opportunity to see a demo of Resident Evil Village, and I must say that it looked really amazing. The only issue is that I haven’t played any of these games myself—none of them will be out until later this year—so it’s hard for me to say with certainty what the A17 Pro is capable of at this early stage.

Though it will take some time to fully test the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s performance capabilities, this is one of the most dependable and fastest smartphones available right now, Resident Evil or not.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: IOS

This quick performance extends to all of your interactions with iOS 17, which comes pre-installed on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It doesn’t completely revamp Apple’s iPhone software, but there are a few really good updates available.
Personally, I think Standby mode is the best. Your iPhone will automatically transition to the new Standby interface when it is charging and in a horizontal position. This is where you can view your calendar, the weather, and other widgets in addition to a sizable clock that shows the time and incoming notifications.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

In particular, Stand By functions exceptionally well with a Mag Safe charging stand. My iPhone 15 Pro Max essentially becomes a small smart display for the evening when I place it on the one by my bed at night. I can quickly check the time, make sure my alarm is set, and ask Siri to switch off the lights at bedtime. Additionally, you can improve Stand By even further by looking at some of the third-party apps that are available.
Additionally, I’ve been quite pleased with IOS 17’s interactive widgets. App developers can now incorporate interactive elements into their widget designs, allowing you to control a widget directly from your home screen by tapping on it.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: battery life

Let’s talk about battery life now. With the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple promises the same amount of battery life as it did with the iPhone 14 Pro Max the previous year: up to 25 hours of streamed video playback or up to 29 hours of video playback. Better endurance should be possible due to the A17 Pro chip’s more power-efficient 3nm design, and it is! However, it goes a little deeper than that.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

I can get through more of the day with the iPhone 15 Pro Max than I can with my iPhone 14 Pro Max running iOS 17. When I go to bed at about 11 p.m. on most days, I usually have about 10% battery life left (after starting my day anywhere).

iPhone 15 Pro Max: charging and USB-C

This is probably the appropriate time to discuss USB-C. Yes, the Lightning port on the iPhone 15 Pro Max has been replaced with a USB-C port. As someone who primarily uses Mag Safe chargers, it doesn’t really affect me, but still, I think it’s a good change. Only my Air Pods Max and older iPhones, out of the dozens of devices I own, have needed a Lightning cable in recent years. It’s a wonderful feeling to have an iPhone that now connects to everything with the same cable—my Android phones, Kindle, mouse, keyboard, etc.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

It is disappointing that Apple did not take advantage of this significant port change to finally address charging performance, even though it is not a deal breaker. It’s a fact that for years now, iPhones have been among the slowest-charging smartphones, and the competition keeps up with them. With its 45W charging speed, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra can go from 0% to 65% in just 30 minutes. The One Plus 11 has a maximum output of 80W, which allows it to fully charge from 0% to 100% in just 30 minutes.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: price and availability

The starting price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which comes with 256GB of storage, is $1,199. Although that is the same cost as the 256GB iPhone 14 Pro Max from the previous year, Apple has removed the $1,099 128GB option, so this year’s price increase is actually $100.

Verdict on iPhone 15 Pro Max

Thus, to sum up, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is really fantastic. It’s no secret these days that the upcoming iPhone will most likely be a very good smartphone, and this latest generation doesn’t change that. However, as I indicated at the outset of this review, Apple made some significant changes this year.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

The latest titanium design is very beautiful. It feels really nice and looks gorgeous. Those who were previously turned off by the Pro Max’s size issue will find it much more approachable thanks to the improved feel in the palm. When you take into account the USB-C port’s ease of use, the 5x telephoto camera’s increased versatility, and all the other wonderful features of the phone.
