Concerning the Diversity Celebration

The university’s dedication to actively addressing the educational, economic, cultural, and societal needs of the evolving region, state, country, and world is supported and strengthened by App State’s Diversity Celebration. The occasion offers a space where many viewpoints, cultures, and beliefs are welcomed, valued, and honored.
A diverse range of local and international music, delicious cuisine, creative crafts, and unique dancing are all featured during the festival. We invite all members of the local community, faculty, staff, and students from nearby K–12 schools to participate in this artistic and entertaining celebration of cultures.

Sustainability and Diversity

In the human context, diversity refers to the incorporation of a broad range of cultures, ethnic groups, races, religious views, socioeconomic backgrounds, and gender identities. The vast range of human cultures and languages is only one aspect of life’s diversity; other aspects include the variety of plant and animal species, their habitats, and ecosystems. Thus, a world where biological, cultural, and linguistic diversity flourishes due to the system’s strength is one that is more sustainable. A resilient and sustainable world is constructed on top of this wide range of ecological and human cultures.

Celebrating

Although the Diversity Celebration uses diversity to promote sustainability, the event also runs ongoing environmental programs such as:

  • Initiativeally bring your own bottle.
  • food waste composting and recycling.
  • Minimize the effort involved in product packaging (bulk vs. individual).
  • Encourage regional companies.
  • recycling of event supplies, décor, etc. on an annual basis.
  • obtaining food locally.
  • Using shuttles can help cut down on carbon emissions and traffic jams.
  • minimizing the use of paper by distributing advertisements electronically.
  • Volunteers from the faculty, staff, and students support the event’s ongoing operations.
  • Vegetarian/sensitive to food allergies menu.

Why Honor Diverse Opinions?

When it comes to ethnicity, ethnic origin and color, religion and creed, sexual orientation, age, and ability, to mention a few, diversity is a total that is larger than the sum of its parts. All of the facets of our humanity, including our various modes of being, knowing, and navigating the world, are encapsulated in this one idea as we are always changing beings living in a constantly shifting environment.
Innumerable variations in intelligence, language, race, politics, religion, national service, gender presentation, philosophy, and a plethora of other characteristics shared by all people expose and help us to know one another as human beings. The first step towards celebrating our diversity, which shape our cultures, values, thoughts, and entire way of being in the world, is acknowledging our shared humanity. Diversity is the primary source of information about the creative life force and the fundamental reality that guides our comprehension and care for it.
Diversity is acknowledged at App State as a crucial unifying factor for both the interdisciplinary approach to education and the larger life experience. Humans can flourish in an institutional culture that values the whole range of human attributes and elevates each member of the university community by intentional appreciation of their unique gifts. Our national culture has been influenced by the adage “think globally, act locally” to recognize that we live in a heterogeneous society. Global systems, including economics, governments, religions, and cultures, are becoming more and more interdependent. When differences are worked together, they become assets. Working together can lead to peace.
