A privately held international firm called EnvisionTEC designs, produces, and distributes more than 40 different desktop and production 3D printer configurations based on seven different process technologies that create items from digital design files. The 2002-founded business now has corporate offices in Germany’s Gladbeck and Dearborn, Michigan, for its international operations.  EnvisionTEC has created and commercialized a number of novel additive manufacturing technologies used in 3D printing since company submitted its initial patent application in 1999.

Three of such techniques rely on using light to cure liquid resin into three-dimensional objects using computer design files.

EnvisionTEC began making Perfactory printers in 2002 by using Texas Instruments DLP[9] projectors. In this method, pictures from a digital light source are projected into a vat of liquid photopolymer or resin to cure it, causing the photopolymer to solidify voxel by voxel, creating a solid item. DLP 3D printing is a popular technique among manufacturers of items that call for high resolution, superb surface finish, and intricate details because it provides for extremely high resolution, excellent surface finish, and complex details.

EnvisionTEC later developed Scan, Spin, and Selectively Photocure (3SP) technology, which debuted in 2013, to 3D print larger objects while maintaining quality. This is because the resolution delivered by DLP technologies starts to taper off as the size of the final object increases or the light source moves away from the part being built. By reflecting the beam through a rotating drum and a series of optical components, the light from a multi-cavity laser diode with an orthogonal mirror spinning at 20,000 rpm is focused onto the surface of the photopolymer across the Y direction. A multi-cavity laser diode, its driver, and all of its optics are found inside an imaging light source (ILS). Depending on several factors, the ILS moves at 1-2 inches per second in the X direction.

Continuous Digital Light Manufacturing (cDLM) technology was another unique innovation disclosed by EnvisionTEC in June 2016 with the introduction of the Micro Plus cDLM at the JCK Las Vegas tradeshow. On its Continuous Digital Light Manufacturing technique, EnvisionTEC originally applied for a patent in 2006, and one was eventually granted in 2011. Since the build platform can move continuously in the Z axis according to CLDM technology, 3D printed items may compete more directly with injection molded ones thanks to their quicker build times and isotropic Z axis features. Together, the quick build periods and isotropic nature of the builds make novel dual-cure materials conceivable that were not previously feasible with conventional DLP printing. A Starter, Developer, and Manufacturing model are currently available in the company’s 3D-Bioplotter line, which uses pressure to extrude materials in three dimensions. Materials are injected using syringes that move in three dimensions and range in consistency from a thick paste to a liquid. Hendrik John, a German inventor, created EnvisionTEC. John later co-managed the company with Al Siblani, a Lebanese immigrant who traveled to the US to finish his academic studies. Siblani entered a 3D printing sector that was still in its infancy after receiving a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Lawrence Technological University[19] and a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from Wayne State University, both of which are situated in Metro Detroit.
