Google Classroom

Google Classroom is a free blended learning tool designed to make creating, assigning, and grading assignments easier for educational institutions. Google Classroom’s main goal is to make file sharing between instructors and students easier. About 150 million people were using Google Classroom as of 2021.
In order to facilitate communication between teachers and students, Google Classroom makes use of a number of proprietary user applications (Google Applications for Education). Pupils can be automatically imported from a school domain or invited to join a class using a private code. Every class establishes a distinct folder in the user’s Google Drive, where students can turn in assignments for teacher evaluation. After grading a document, teachers can track each student’s progress by looking through the revision history of that particular document. They can also return work to students with comments and grades included.

Google Classroom: What is it?

With the help of a set of online resources called Google Classroom, instructors can assign homework, receive assignments from students, mark it, and receive papers back that have been graded. It was developed to enable digital learning and get rid of paper in the classroom. It was originally intended to be used with Chrome books and other laptops in schools to facilitate more effective information and assignment sharing between teachers and students.
Google Classroom is used far more frequently now that more schools are switching to online instruction as instructors swiftly adopt paperless instruction. Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Sites, Earth, Calendar, and Gmail can all be used in conjunction with Classrooms. Google Hangouts and Meet can be added for in-person instruction or questions.

What is the price of Google Classroom?

The use of Google Classroom is free. Classroom just gathers all of the compatible apps into one convenient location. All of the apps are already free Google tools.
The service must be registered by an educational institution in order to add all of its instructors and students. In order to prevent outsiders from accessing the data or the students involved, this is done to ensure that security is as tight as possible.
None of the data is scanned by Google, and it is not utilized for advertising purposes. Neither Google Classroom nor the Google Workspace for Education platform as a whole contains any advertising.
Within the larger Google ecosystem, which includes Classroom, there are packages that come with paid upgrades. For $4 per student annually, the Standard Google Workspace for Education package includes a security center, sophisticated device and app management, log exports for analysis from Gmail and Classroom, and additional features.
For $4 per license per month, you can access the Teaching and Learning Upgrade package, which includes features like polls, Q&A, and more, along with meetings for up to 250 participants and live streaming to up to 10,000 viewers via Google Meet. In order to directly integrate tools and content, you also get the Classroom add-on. Infinite originality reports are available to check for plagiarism and other issues.

In addition to offering a plethora of options, Google Classroom can enable educators to go above and beyond in supporting students’ learning in remote or hybrid learning environments. In addition to providing extra information and a workspace for students, teachers can assign assignments and then upload documents outlining the requirements for completion.
It’s very easy to keep to a schedule when students receive email notifications when assignments are waiting, and teachers don’t have to constantly check in with the students. These assignments allow for more flexible time management and advanced lesson planning because they can be assigned in advance and scheduled to go out whenever the teacher chooses.
Students can turn in completed assignments for grading by the teacher. After that, teachers can give the student comments and feedback.
Additionally, Google Classroom makes it much simpler to use automatically throughout the entire school by enabling the export of grades into a student information system (SIS).
Teachers can compare student submissions from the same school to other student submissions using Google’s originality report feature. An excellent method of avoiding plagiarism.

Announcements on Google Classroom

Announcements can be sent out to the whole class by teachers. These can show up on the Google Classroom home screen, which students will see when they log in again. To ensure that everyone receives a message at a specific time, it can also be sent via email. Alternatively, it can be sent to the specific people to whom it pertains.
Additional rich media can be added to an announcement by attaching files from services like Google Drive and YouTube.
Any announcement can be configured to function as a noticeboard statement or to allow students to respond to it in both directions.

Google Classroom

The privacy and security features of Google Classroom are a major source of worry for parents, teachers, and students. Since Google Classroom is a free platform, many of its detractors have closely examined Google’s data collection procedures, including the volume of data gathered and its intended uses. In a similar vein, a large number of reports from 2020 surfaced detailing anonymous users entering Google Classroom sessions without instructor permission. In response to these reports, Google declared that accessing a Google Classroom meeting automatically requires users to be logged into a Google account. Although Google has more stringent privacy policies for its educational apps, if those tools are enabled, it can still gather student data from them, such as YouTube.

Concerns about student safety also exist. Google Classroom’s security settings allow teachers to address security concerns, but issues with inappropriate language use, sharing of explicit photos, and cyberbullying persist among students. This activity cannot be stopped by classroom monitoring tools, so it is primarily the responsibility of the teacher to spot and put an end to it.
In response, a lot of school districts have restricted students’ access to Classroom features like making their own announcements and comments. However, this also inhibits community building and collaborative learning.

Although it is unlikely that Google will be directly attacked or that your district’s data will be compromised, Google operates under a shared responsibility model, which means that an IT administrator in a district is in charge of configuring and overseeing security settings. This indicates that security problems are typically caused by human error, weak passwords, and security configuration errors. Users of Google Classroom may experience security risks such as malware, phishing, account takeover (a type of identity fraud in which an adversarial third party obtains access to a user’s credentials), and data loss.
