Introduction

Operating under the name Guccio Gucci S.p.A. GOO-chee, Italian: is a Florence, Italy-based luxury fashion house. Handbags, ready-to-wear, shoes, accessories, and home décor are among its product lines. It also licenses its name and branding to Coty for use in fragrance and cosmetic products sold under the Gucci Beauty brand.
In Florence, Tuscany, Guccio Gucci (1881–1953) founded Gucci in 1921. Aldo Gucci, Guccio’s son, oversaw the development of Gucci into a globally recognized brand and an emblem of the Italian dolce vita era. After internal conflicts in the 1980s, the Gucci family was completely removed from the company’s capital by 1993. Following this crisis, the brand was revitalized, and in 1999 Gucci joined the French conglomerate PPR, which subsequently changed its name to Kering.
Gucci generated €9.6 billion in sales in 2019 from 487 stores and 17,157 employees, an increase from €8.2 billion in 2018. Alessandro Michele served as Gucci’s creative director from January 2015 until November 23, 2022, and Marco Bizzarri has been the company’s CEO since December 2014.The creative director at the moment is Sabato De Sarno.

History

Born in Florence in 1921

The Gucci family asserts that it has roots dating back to approximately 1410 in the commercial hub of Florence. Guccio Giovanbattista Giacinto Dario Maria Gucci (1881–1953) relocated to London in 1897 to take a job at the upscale Savoy Hotel after leaving Florence for Paris. He would load and unload the affluent guests’ luggage as a bellhop there, getting to know their preferences for fabrics, styles, and modes of transportation. He later gained even more experience with opulent travel lifestyles when he worked for four years for the Compagnie des Wagons-Lits, a European rail company that specialized in upscale travel leisure. He was employed by the luxury luggage manufacturer Franzi following World War 1.
Azienda Individuale Guccio Gucci, which he opened in Florence’s Via della Vigna Nuova in 1921, was where Guccio Gucci sold imported leather luggage. In order to have his own leather goods made by regional artisans, he also opened a small workshop. Gucci eventually needed to buy a bigger workshop to accommodate its sixty artisans. Mussolini’s 1935 invasion of Ethiopia prompted the League of Nations to place an embargo on Italian trade. As leather became more difficult to come by, Guccio Gucci was forced to include materials like jute, wicker, wood, linen, and raffia into the creation of his products. Gucci’s signature motif, the rombi, was developed. The Guccis created “cuoio grasso” using a novel tanning method, which later became a Gucci trademark. Gucci launched its handbags.

The children and wife of Guccio were employed at the shop. Since he began working for the family business in 1925, Guccio’s son Aldo has been more and more involved. By establishing a new store at 21 Via Condotti in Rome in 1938 and introducing additional Gucci accessories (gloves, belts, wallets, and keychains), he persuaded his father to expand. The Gucci artisans made boots for the Italian infantry during World War II.
A shortage of materials during World War II led the company to switch from making leather handbags to cotton canvas handbags. But the canvas stood out thanks to a distinctive double-G symbol and strong red and green bands. Following the war, Florence came to be associated with the Gucci crest, which featured an armored knight and shield encircled by a ribbon bearing the family name.

Creation of the Brand

Guccio Gucci established the brand as a tiny leather business in Florence, Italy, in 1921. The brand includes some equestrian flair into its modern designs because the company’s primary focus was on saddles and other horse riding accessories. As the brand spread to Rome and Milan in the 1930s and 1940s, it quickly became well-known among aristocrats. Around this time, the company began producing a wider range of accessories and using materials other than leather. A scarcity of leather led to the invention of new textiles, like the famous Bamboo Bag in 1947 and the first Gucci print in the 1930s, which featured tiny interconnected diamonds in dark brown woven into tan hemp fabric.
The first Gucci boutique opened in New York in 1953, the same year that Guccio Gucci, the company’s founder, passed away. In the US, Gucci was extremely successful. This was also the period when their iconic Flora print and current logo were unveiled. Gucci introduced its first ready-to-wear collectible in 1981. By then, Guccio’s grandson Artizio had taken over the business and it was on the verge of bankruptcy.
After Dawn Mello became Gucci’s creative director from 1989 to 1994, the brand started to experience success once more. When Tom Ford took over in 1994, he gave Gucci a new focus on “sex appeal,” which helped the brand become a $10 billion fashion phenomenon.
After its ten years with Ford, Gucci kept switching up its creative directors, going through Alessandra Facchinetti and Frida Giannini. Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s current creative director, was appointed to the role in 2015 and has enjoyed considerable success and popularity.
