What do Allstate do?

American insurance firm The Allstate Corporation has had its main office in Glenview, Illinois (with a Northbrook, Illinois address) since 2022. It was originally established in 1931 as a division of Sears, Roebuck & Co. It was split off in 1993 but remained partially owned by Sears until June 1995, when it became a fully independent business. In Canada, the firm also offers personal lines insurance.

Allstate is a sizable business, and the 2019 Fortune 500 list of the biggest American companies by total sales placed them at number 79 with revenues of $39.8 billion in 2018.
Its well-known advertising campaign, which has been in operation since 1950, poses the question “Are you in good hands?” and features the instantly recognized emblem of two enormous human hands protectively holding a suburban-style home.


In 1930, the concept for Allstate Insurance Company was born over a game of bridge. Wood, a neighbor, was approached by insurance agent Carl L. Odell with the notion of selling vehicle insurance by direct mail. On April 17, 1931, the Sears tire brand-named Allstate Insurance Company opened for business and began selling vehicle insurance via direct mail and the Sears catalog.
In a Chicago Sears shop, Allstate established its first sales office in 1934.
Throughout the 1950s, Allstate launched new products, including as fire insurance in 1954 and homes and life insurance in 1957.
In 1953, Allstate started offering insurance to Canadians. In Canada, Allstate Insurance Company was established in 1964.
The business became public in 1991 before achieving total independence in 1995.
Their website, www.allstate.com, went live in 1996.
Allstate Solutions Private Limited, popularly known as Allstate India, debuted in Bangalore in 2012 and serves as a technology and operations hub for its US parent company, offering software development and business process outsourcing services.
Allstate and the Red Cross worked together to assist Hawaii and California recover from severe disasters in 2018 and 2019.
Allstate announced in July 2020 that it has paid $4 billion to acquire National General Insurance.

A pair of “good hands”

Davis W. Ellis, a sales representative for Allstate Insurance Company, coined the catchphrase “You’re in good hands” in the 1950s after using a similar expression to comfort his wife that their kid would be cared for by a doctor. Since 1950, this has served as the catchphrase.Allstate calls itself the “Good Hands People” as well.
Ed Reimers, the spokesperson for Allstate, was featured in TV, print, and radio advertisements in the 1960s and 1970s. Reimers frequently appeared with his hands cupped together. The spokesperson for 22 years, he did not change.
This 1975 ad features an egg rolling on the table before falling and nearly breaking all the way to the ground before being tenderly placed in the nest by a hand.
According to a research conducted in 2000 by the Medill Graduate Department of Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University, the Allstate catchphrase “You’re in good hands” was the most well-known in the country.


The original hands logo for Allstate was created by Theodore Conterio in the 1950s. Whoever could create the greatest logo would receive $50, it was announced to the staff. Using the tagline “You’re in good hands,” Theodore Conterio created the winning design and received $50.

“The stance of Allstate”

As the rate of policy growth slowed, Allstate began using Dennis Haysbert as its spokesperson in their television ads in 2003. The purpose of the advertisements was to convey that Allstate’s service was superior to those of budget-friendly carriers GEICO and Progressive.Between 2003 and 2016, Haysbert made an appearance in more than 250 advertisements.


Leo Burnett Worldwide invented Mayhem. In his “Mr. Mayhem” character presentation to Allstate, Burnett compared him to Harvey Keitel’s Mr. White from the 1992 movie Reservoir Dogs.
Dean Winters has played Mayhem ever since the campaign began in April 2010. The figure typically has a bruised, scarred, or bandaged face and dresses in a black suit, white dress shirt, and black necktie.
Mayhem is a Leo Burnett Worldwide invention. Burnett linked Mr. Mayhem to Harvey Keitel’s Mr. White from the 1992 movie Reservoir Dogs when he presented “Mr. Mayhem” to Allstate.
Since the start of the campaign in April 2010, Dean Winters has played Mayhem. The figure usually wears a black suit, a white dress shirt, and a black necktie while having a damaged, disfigured, or bandaged face.
After GEICO, State Farm, and Progressive, Allstate was rated fourth in advertising spending; as a result, the company created the “Mayhem” campaign and the character (Mayhem). The firm wanted to create a campaign that would lean more toward younger clients than the “older, more traditional customers” that were the focus of Allstate’s previous “Our Stand” campaign with Dennis Haysbert. According to Burnett executive vice president Nina Abnee, “We wanted to kick Flo’s ass.” In mid-June 2010, the campaign was initially introduced. The persona was presented via TV and radio commercials, billboards, and online banners. A few ads were modified to provide local information.Allstate had received almost 80 industry honors for the campaign by the middle of 2011.

Employing Colossus

A lot of complaints made against Allstate (and other insurers), including those in Barardinelli’s book, focused on the usage of a program named “Colossus” to handle claims. In 2010, 41 states sued Allstate for using Colossus inconsistently, and Allstate agreed to pay a $10 million fee as part of the settlement. It also consented to standardized software usage. However, according to a news statement from James J. Wrynn, the superintendent of New York’s insurance department, “it is important to note that we found no systemic underpayment of bodily injury claims.”

SEC community service team

The Southeastern league (SEC), a collegiate athletic league with member institutions mostly in the Southern region of the United States, selects Community Service Teams made up of athletes from its member schools’ various sports each year. The award is given to athletes in appreciation of their volunteerism and community service endeavors off the court or off the field. Each SEC institution should have a representative on the Community Service Team who participates in a variety of sports. This idea was introduced by the SEC in 1994 with the formation of a football Community Service squad, initially known as the Good Works squad.Through the years, different sports have begun to receive notice. The Community Service squad is a fictitious group that won’t actually get together and compete, much as an all-conference or all-American squad.
The players volunteer and do community service in schools, for neighborhood organizations and houses of worship, as well as for youth-oriented initiatives at their respective colleges.

Sport for Good Laureus Award

The Laureus Sport for Good Award recognizes persons who have made “tremendous contributions to sport or to society through sport” and honors their accomplishments. It was given out for the first time as one of the first prizes given out at the Laureus World Sports Awards in 2000. The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, a global organization that supports 500,000 young people via more than 150 charitable programs, presents the awards. Nelson Mandela delivered the opening remarks during the inaugural event, which took place on May 25, 2000, in Monte Carlo. At an annual awards ceremony conducted in various cities throughout the globe, the winner is given a Cartier-made Laureus trophy. The 2004 honor was split between the national cricket teams of Pakistan and India as well as the Kenyan cricket organization Mathare Youth Sports Association.

Allstate Center

Northwest of Chicago in Rosemont, Illinois, the Allstate Arena is a multi-use facility. It is situated 5 miles (8.0 km) north of O’Hare International Airport at the intersection of Mannheim Road and Lunt Avenue, just north of Mannheim Road’s junction with the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90). The Rosemont Horizon, the venue’s original name when it first opened in 1980, had 17,500 basketball and 16,692 ice hockey seats.
The American Hockey League’s (AHL) Chicago Wolves play in the arena, which has also hosted a number of other professional and college teams, most notably the DePaul Blue Demons from 1980 to 2017.
